It is second only to Heathrow as the busiest airport in Europe and is in the top thirty busiest airports in the world. The airport itself has two runways, but only the Southern runway is used. The Northern runway is only used if the Southern runway is not operational. Gatwick Airport is the busiest solo runway airport in the entire world. Gatwick has two terminals, a North and South terminal. The southern terminal was completed in 1958, with the northern terminal being completed in 1983.
