About City Airport:
London City Airport is the only ‘London’ airport of all five that is actually technically located within London. London City Airport, known by the International Air Transport Association as LCY, this is a code that might be viewed on airline tickets, luggage labels and the screens of high street travel agents. The Queen, Elizabeth II opened the airport in 1987, when it began servicing flights to Rotterdam, Lille and Strasbourg. Since then it has gone on to serve many more destinations throughout the United Kingdom and Europe.
The airport is a single runway airport, located in the Docklands area of London. It was mainly intended for business passengers and is subject to short take off and landing regulations due to the position and length of the airstrip runway. The airport is only six miles from the centre of London’s financial district. This proximity to Central London makes it the ideal airport for European travellers wishing to reduce stressful travel time when visiting London for holidays.
Passengers can access the airport or Central London in the other direction directly via the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and a short walk through an improving area. The underground or DLR is the most sensible way to make your way to the airport. However, there is space for up to four hundred taxis outside the airport, if passengers wish to travel in comfort to and from the City. Of course one can drive to and from the airport and hire vehicles through the usual rental companies. The busiest period of the year is the winter, when travelers head east to the ski slopes with Swiss Airlines.
Although it is smaller in size than the major London airports, the airport has some great facilities. Airside and landside restaurants and cafes, shops, cash machines and wifi throughout the entire terminal are just some of those facilities. There are no hotels at the location, but there is plenty of high quality accommodation within less than a mile. For business users, there are conference and meeting rooms that are available for hire.
London City Airport services over one and a half million passengers per year, interacts with fifteen airlines and connects to thirty-five destinations across Europe. In 2001, the airport won the ‘Business Terminus of the Year’ Award. It is considered that it will play a central part in fulfilling the transport needs of the 2012 London hosting of the Olympic games.
