About Heathrow Airport:
Heathrow Airport is the largest of London's five airports and is owned by the British Airports Authority (BAA) a Spanish owned organisation. Heathrow has the busiest passenger terminals in Europe and is also considered to be one of the busiest passenger airports in the world. Heathrow also holds licenses for private charter and cargo flights, as well as additional facilities for flight tuition. The airport itself is located on the far western fringes of Greater London, about fifteen miles from the centre of the city itself. It has the International Air Transport Association (IATA) coding LHR, which can often be found on passenger’s tickets and luggage labels.
Heathrow Airport has four terminals currently in operation, with a fifth known as Terminal 5 under construction at this time. The airport has two major runways and many smaller runways. However, there is still much debate about the future of the airport, with a sixth terminal and a third runway being political hot potatoes, as it would require the demolition of six hundred local homes.
Heathrow Airport is accessible by car, coach or train. There are National Express coach services from all of the country with connections to Heathrow. Train services such as the Heathrow Express, a direct train from Paddington serve all terminals, the Heathrow Connect, a stopping service only servesTerminals 1, 2 and 3. One can also take a tube train on the Picadilly Line from Central London to all of Heathrow's terminals. By car, travellers should first ascertain which terminal they are heading from, then leave either the M4 or the M25 at the correct junction.
Visitors to Heathrow Airport should not be disturbed to find a heavy security presence, in the guise of the Metropolitan police and possibly even the British Army. Heathrow has been the target of several famous attempted terrorist attacks. To this date, there have been no successful attacks on the airport. The presence of security marks a change in thinking on airport security and should reassure passengers and staff that the British government takes its responsibility to Heathrow's safety very seriously.
Each terminal boasts a full range of facilities from prayer rooms and chaplains of seven different faiths to bars, cafes, restaurants, internet facilities and of course, world famous shopping outlets. A range of airport hotels, located around the site, service Heathrow. These include the Radisson, Thistle, Jury’s Inn and Travel Inn hotels.
