About Stansted Airport:
Located thirty miles outside of Central London, within the district of Uttlesford, in the County of Essex is London Stansted Airport. It is a very busy single runway airport that services many of the low cost or no-frills airlines such as Easyjet, Ryanair and the newer carriers such as Air Berlin. The airport is known by the International Air Travel Association code of STN. From London Stansted Airport, air traffic flies to over thirty countries throughout the world.
Accessing London Stansted Airport is reasonably simply by road and rail. Beneath the terminal, Stansted has its own railway station. Regular trains connect the airport with the Midlands to the north and London to the southwest. The airport is connected to London via the Stansted Express that runs into Liverpool Street Station. Tickets are quite expensive at around twenty-five pounds for a return ticket. Regular bus and coach services connect Stansted to various bus/coach terminals in London. These are much cheaper than the Stansted Express, but may be subject to traffic holdups. National Express has coach services from all over the UK that stop at Stansted Airport. London Stansted airport is approached by car from London via the M11 motorway and via the A120 from the other direction. There are some short term car parks close to the terminal and the long term parking facilities are situated over a mile away and use a free shuttle to connect with the airport.
Stansted Airport is owned by BAA, the British Airports Authority, a company owned by the Spanish Ferrovial group. Housed within the single terminal structure of Stansted, there are a full range of shops, food and beverage establishments and facilities including restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops selling last minute holiday products such as sun tan lotion and sunglasses to luxury items and tax free electrical goods.
Stansted remains the third busiest airport in the United Kingdom. It services over thirty airlines flying to one hundred and sixty destinations. Over twenty three million passengers passed through its arrivals and departures in the last twelve months. Much of its success can be traced to the no frill airlines and low cost package holiday firms that have made Stansted their hub.
At present the airport is planning on constructing a second runway, the first South East airport in many years to get permission to do so. However, there is great local opposition to this. However, BAA insists that without the second runway, Stansted will no longer be able to cope with the demands of air traffic volume into the next decade.
